Many of those making use of the facilities provided by the association have been in the UK for many yearss, but others have arrived more recently. Their countries of origin include Pakistan, India, Turkey, Somalia, Mauritius, Morocco, Sudan, Bangladesh, Bosnia, Kosovo, West Indies, the Caribbean and the UK. Problem faced by those attending the centre are:

• adjusting to living in a new country and different culture
• poor literacy in their own country and different culture.
• lack of knowledge of services and benefits available to them
• low income.

The problems that women encounter in every day life are greater for those who did not grow up in this country. Women who have left their families and home environment can feel lonely and isolated when they arrive in a strange country.

The centre provides a place where language is not a barrier and where Muslim women can observe the customs of their faith and culture with out embarrassment or restriction. At the centre they can:

• take advantage of learning opportunities.
• acquire new skills.
• make friends with other Muslim women.

Children who are recent immigrants or refugees may be labeled as slow learner by teachers, and yet not receive the specialist support they require. The supplementary education programme:

• encourages children to have high aspirations.
• counters the disadvantages experienced in mainstream schools.
• offer learning in an environment that values culture traditions

The Muslim community in Southwark includes many people on low incomes or dependent on state benefits, living in over crowded conditions. We work to help families break out of the poverty cycle and aspire to a better quality of life.

Regular advice sessions are available on benefits and social services provision.

• Women, with improved language skills and greater confidenc, are better able to support their childern at school and encourage them to contnue into furter and higher education.
• classes leading towards professional and vocational qualifications enable women to find work and increase the family income.
