| ° PRE SCHOOL PROVISION |
|
The
Centre offers high quality care for children from 6 months to 5 years
old and organises a programme for children that will aid their development
in meeting the early learning goals as defined by the Qualifications
and Curriculum Agency (QCA). These are in the areas of:
Personal, social and emotional development
Communication, language and literacy
Mathematics
Knowledge and understanding of the world
Physical development
Creative development
Many of the children are growing up in homes where English is not
spoken or is spoken as the second language. Our aim is to work with
parents to help children develop their language skills, advising and
encouraging parents to support their child’s English and at
the same time to develop their own English speaking skills. Records
of each child’s individual development are kept and an end-of-term
report is presented to all parents highlighting their child’s
achievements and recommending further activities to do at home.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
Our
IT facilities have been completely transformed from classrooms containing
adequate equipment to a state-of-the-art computer suite. So far
we have refurbished and fully equipped two IT rooms with networked
computers. This was made possible by funding from the Wates Foundation
and the Community Fund:
All the Pentium 4 PCs in these rooms are brand new: they have Windows,Office
and desktop publishing software installed and are permanently connected
to the internet. One of the rooms is designated as an internet café,
and can be used on a drop-in basis by all our members. The other
is a teaching room and is used in the main by our adult education
and supplementary school classes.
Improved facilities have increased the level of interest in developing
computer skills. The following courses for adults took place last
year:
COMPUTER STUDIES (OCR CLAIT)
• Develops word processing, spreadsheet and database skills
– new CLIAT syllabus.
WEBSITE DEVELOPMENT
• Develops the skills to plan, develop and maintain websites.

| ° FASHION & DESIGN |
|
This
course is accredited by LOCN and introduces students to basic concepts
of fashion and design. Students learn to make clothes for their family
and friends and can utilise this new-found skill to earn a living
from home.
To date, we have been running one group that includes intermediate
and advanced students, but plan to offer two classes in the future
due to the increasing popularity of this course

| ° INTRODUCTION TO
CHILDCARE |
|
This
is a London Open College Network (LOCN) certificate equivalent to
NVQ levels 1 and 2. The course is structured around 3 units of work:
• learning through play . • learning through
physical play • learning through reading and writing
Some of our students are interested in finding work at the end of
the course whilst others would like to progress to NVQ level 3. However,
they will not attend courses at mixed colleges. The SMWA is considering
how their needs may be met. TOP . |

SCHOOL |
|
The
after-school classes as well as the Saturday school, all make good
use of the new IT facilities. All young people attending are given
an e-mail address and have free time when they can check their e-mail,
browse the web or play computer games.
The children are making excellent progress with their IT skills, which
include word-processing and researching topics on the web. They are
also interested in computer design applications and last year a group
worked on producing a local newspaper.
Some of the older children bring in homework or coursework for
their GCSEs and there has been a steady improvement in the presentation
of their work.
Lesson plans are based on the National Curriculum, and the IT tutor
works closely with the Maths and English tutors so that IT is integrated
into and supports other subjects.

A
major priority has been to develop professional on-site pre-school
provision that is grounded in Muslim values and traditions. Such a
service makes it possible for women with young children to attend
classes and other events at the Centre.
Following much discussion and consultation, the crèche has
been refurbished to meet the high standards required by the DfES and
Southwark Council. Existing staff benefited from further training
and an NNEB-qualified nurse joined the team this year.
The extensive and well-developed outdoor play space is much loved
by the children, many of whom have no or little access to safe outdoor
play space at home. It contains a sand-pit with a removable cover
and climbing structures to engage the children in imaginative and
physical play.
Indoors the room is divided into specialist play areas, which include
a home corner, a quiet corner for reading, reflecting and carpet
time, a computer area in which children can play games and puzzles
and make music. We have bought new tables and chairs at which children
can work and have installed washing and toilet facilities specially
designed for young children.
The carefully planned and designed baby area is also in great demand.
