Welcome

Welcome to our unique Muslim community centre. Here, you will find a safe, friendly environment where you can attend classes and receive all kinds of advice and support as well as meeting people socially.

During the daytime, the activities that take place here are mainly for women and younger children. Outside school hours, however, our programme expands to cater for the interests of the entire family, from school age students right through to senior citizens.

A Centre for Everyone

SMWA does not exclude anyone

Those who work in and use the centre originate from many countries, including Pakistan, Bangladesh, Turkey, Bosnia, Somalia, Mauritius, India, the Middle East and the Caribbean and of course, Great Britain. The majority of our members are Muslim and our centre provides a place where they are free to observe Islamic customs and traditions without restriction or embarrassment. However, we welcome people from all faiths to join us and are proud of our diverse member base.

    •    We support women of all ages, from toddlers to senior citizens
    •    We welcome Muslims of every nationality and ethnic origin
    •    We are a registered charity not a religious or political organisation
    •    We meet all appropriate educational standards and safety requirements

All of our activities are open to non-Muslims, and we welcome people from all faiths to join us.

What does SMWA stand for?

The initials SMWA stand for Southwark Muslim Women's Association but don't let that put you off if your'e male! Although SMWA was originally formed to provide a safe environment for Muslim Women, that was thirty years ago, and weve come a long way since then. Boys and men are very welcome to use the centre, but women are still at the heart of SMWA, just as they are in our families.

Welcome to SMWA Online

Summer 2009 marked the 30th anniversary of SMWA.

We can look back with great pride on the progress we've made since our humble beginning. However, there is still much more to do as we continue to make a difference to the lives of the disadvantaged people of Southwark.

Through the courses we run, we bring communities together and strive to enable young people, in particular, to create a positive career and life direction for themselves.

This is the future and this is what all our activities are aimed at.

Happy 2010 to all from everyone at SMWA
